“I know everyone says they have a wonderful crew and certainly that can’t be the case. We can’t all be wonderful. Somebody somewhere is working with a crew of drunken thieves” -Hugh Laurie
The above quote was the original inspiration for the Drunken Thieves, back when we were just a name to organize Film Projects and Blogging.
These days it means something else: As my interests move towards Data Science and Machine Learning, we find the name works just as well. The more time I spend working with modern ML, Statistics, Big Data and the associated “Stack”, the more I am forced to admit that in the grand tradition of “Standing on the shoulders of giants”, a large amount of our modern capacity to capture, analyze and work with Data involves so much prior work (Both Mathematical and Technical) that calling it “Theft” is the only fair, if somewhat self-depreciating, way to reference the contributions from those who have come before.
As for Drunkenness: The Drunkard’s Walk was one of the foundational texts in my journey towards truly appreciating the Statistical parts of Data Science.
